Overview of the Festival
Since 2002 this great race has been staged under the banner of the Golden Horse which has embraced the occasion with unstinting support, helping to consolidate the meeting as the most important festival of speed on the African continent.
The R 750,000 Golden Horse Sprint is the top handicap for sprinters in South Africa and was first run in 1962. It was the first sponsored race, as the Gilbey’s Stakes, in KwaZulu-Natal. It has been run under the sponsorship of the Golden Horse since 2002 and today’s stake of R 750,000 is a far cry from the R 7,000 of the initial race. This is the only Sprint in the country that has 4 jackpot of grade one sprints in South Africa.
There are 2 Main Races with the same card, thereby attracting the cream of the country’s speed horses. Golden Horse is proud to announce that it has once again secured the naming rights of two of these races, The Golden Horse Sprint, with a running of R 750,000 and the Tsogo Sun Medallion, with a running of R 600,000.
